After 24 and a half years as the host of NPR’s “Morning Edition” show, Bob Edwards has been dismissed by management (to be replaced by who knows). In a kind of “kicked upstairs” move, he’ll now be a “senior correspondent.”
Yesterday (Friday, April 30, 2004) was his last day on “Morning Edition,” and it was quite touching to hear the guests wish him good-bye. His is the voice of waking up in the morning to me and countless others. NPR’s heavy-handed tactic of ditching him only a few months from his twenty-fifth anniversary as host has not won them many friends. There is an excellent farewell web site here.
