It has been an interesting day at the Kelvin Smith Library. The CWRU Information Technology Services department (who run our campus network, manage AV facilities, run the servers, etc), much of which is housed in this library building is having a massive layoff–in the neighborhood of 40 people today. Over the course of the morning and afternoon people are being called in and getting the ax, with the relentless regularity of the guillotine falling at the end of Poulenc’s opera Dialogues of the Carmelites.
As you might imagine, it is having a negative effect of the library staff, many of whom know the people being laid off. Not a lot is getting done here. Although the library did have a budget reversion, we are managing to do it without layoffs.
I think it’s good that it’s Friday.
